The clean faces for staves seem to be the exception not the norm, and the percentage of trees which can actually yield useful staves is very low. It is quite common to have one side of the tree clean but the other side covered in large and small knots.

Methods for improving yield in tapered logs include crosscutting logs into shorter segments and accepting shorter lumber, tapered sawing, and live by: 1. Over the past few years we have salvaged o board feet of arbutus, garry oak, Pacific yew, black locust, white oak, London plane, English oak, cherry, horse chestnut, plum and walnut as well as other species.

The logs are donated to the Guild by municipalities, arborists and private owners. Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia) is a small conifer tree that produces very little usable wood that is free of large knots, incursions, or voids. Dense and fine grained, it is a joy to turn and takes a finish that rivals many other hardwoods.

As is grows very slowly under the forest canopy, it is not uncommon to have Lumber volume recovery in sawmilling is determined by a confusing interaction of several factors.

The more one knows about each individual factor, the more one can understand how the factors interact. The author identifies and discusses in detail seven factors influencing lumber recovery. Pacific yews are a small component of coniferous forests, usually found as single occurrences; a yew inventory from Quatsino Sound found yew trees/ha.

They are considered a slow growing understory species and can live up to years, although years is more common. Volume and Lumber Recovery Reports - Overview Volume and lumber recovery reports are produced for Interior compilations only.

This family, known for it’s red, berry-like seed cones (Epel, ) is one that has both a far reaching history and an interesting future.

Our English neighbors have Taxus baccata which has similar properties to our pacific species. Net lumber recovery for a 1st quartile northern softwood sawmill with an average log top diameter of " (15 cm) could be up to fbm/m3 or fbm/ft3 or m3/m3.

Log quality, target sizes, saw kerfs and wane allowances will all effect maximum lumber recovery. In this example the fiber recovery distribution is: Finished lumber (kds4s) 47%. Purposes of Lumber-Grade-Recovery Studies The general purpose of a study of lumber-grade recovery is to determine value of lumber yield from selected logs--the logs being rep-resentative of: One species, A given quality or size, or A particular area.

Lumber-recovery studies for a species are the broadest in scope. The Pacific Yew Taxus brevifolia, native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, and Canada Yew Taxus canadensis are the sources of paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug used in breast and lung cancer treatments.

Over-harvesting of the Pacific Yew for this drug has resulted in it becoming an endangered species, though the drug is now produced semi. The Pacific Yew is intimately associated with old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. ONRC is now engaged in a battle with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management who are wasting Pacific Yew, and thereby wasting women's lives, in their zeal to cut Douglas-fir to prop up a declining industry.

Re: what is yew The Pacific Yew is fairly common from Northern California to Alaska and in Northern Idaho. It was considered "junk wood" by logging companies and routinely burned until it was found to be a source for Taxol, a pharmaceutical used for cancer treatment.

Larger logs have been made into fence posts and railroad ties, and Asian and Japanese buyers have paid as much as $7, for prime logs, which are primarily used for carvings.

Such logs are rare because of the shrubby growth habit of the species and the loss of old-growth forests. Millworkers took the logs out of the water, sawed them at the steam-powered mills, and loaded them aboard vessels bound for California, Hawaii, Australia, or other destinations along the Pacific.

Loading lumber was a time-consuming process, often performed by Native American laborers. Pacific yew is prized for its fine-textured, hard, heavy, elastic, remarkable heartwood for a number of uses. The wood is an attractive red, easily worked, and resistant to decay.

Native people traditionally used the wood to craft a number of implements, including bows, canoe paddles, clubs, spear and harpoon shafts, wedges, spoons, and arrowheads.
